Marie Pineau made history as the first woman to serve as pharmacist-in-chief at the Montreal General Hospital, where she was known for her precision, mentorship, and commitment to patient-centred care. Her husband, François Schubert, held the same leadership role at the Royal Victoria Hospital, where he advanced clinical standards and inspired a generation of pharmacists. Together, they devoted their lives to improving patient outcomes through innovation and collaboration.
When Marie passed away in 2017, François sought a meaningful way to honour her life’s work and their shared dedication to the profession they both loved. Through a generous donation of more than $185,000 to the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) Foundation, he established the Prix d’excellence Marie Pineau et François Schubert—a $5,000 annual award recognizing exceptional innovation in pharmacy practice at the MUHC. The award will be presented annually during his lifetime as well as after his passing for twenty years, in tribute to his and his late wife's lasting legacy and to honor their memory.
“Marie believed deeply in the power of ideas to transform care,” says François. “This prize ensures that her drive to improve patient care continues to inspire others. It’s not just about celebrating the past—it’s about encouraging the next generation to keep pushing boundaries.”
Each year, a selection committee composed of five professionals—including MUHC Pharmacist-in-Chief, Director of Medical and Professional Services, two pharmacists, and François Schubert himself—reviews innovative projects designed to enhance pharmacy practice and patient well-being.
“We’re looking for creativity, courage, and a true commitment to patient care,” explains François. “Marie believed progress happens when you challenge convention—and that’s the spirit this award celebrates.”
Through the Prix d’excellence Marie Pineau et François Schubert, François has created more than a tribute—he has built an enduring legacy. One that celebrates Marie’s memory and their shared passion for innovation and excellence in pharmacy, leaving a lasting mark on the field for generations to come.
