A Legacy of Love: The McKay-Levac Family

Laurie McKay-Levac was a woman who lived with purpose. Raised in a large, close-knit family in Dalhousie, Quebec, she carried a boundless love for people and animals. Saturdays were often spent caring for abandoned dogs. Those who knew her say her smile warmed every room.

In 2015, Laurie’s world was turned upside down with a stage-4 ovarian cancer diagnosis at just 56 years old. It was devastating, for Laurie and her entire family.

Laurie was referred to the MUHC Cancer Centre, where she met Dr. Lucy Gilbert, a specialist in ovarian cancer and the founder of the DOvEEgene test—a groundbreaking tool designed to detect ovarian and endometrial cancers at their earliest, most treatable stages.  As Laurie underwent treatment, she learned about the DOvEEgene project and was deeply moved by its potential, recognizing that it could have changed her own diagnosis.

Motivated to help other women, she devoted herself to supporting the initiative and advocating for early detection to become a standard part of women’s care. Her commitment to philanthropy continued during her own battle with the disease.  Laurie passed away in the spring of 2020 at just 61.

Her family continues to champion of the DOvEEgene project as a way to keep her memory alive.

The McKay-Levac family established an annual golf tournament to honor Laurie’s generous spirit. What began as a simple day on the green has grown into a heartfelt celebration of Laurie’s life. To date, the tournament has raised over $137,000.  Laurie’s hope for a future free of ovarian cancer lives on. Her legacy serves as a powerful reminder that one life, lived with purpose and kindness, can leave a lasting impact.
