Enhanced Recovery Programs for Surgery
Despite incredible advancements, surgery is still an invasive procedure and it has a cost for patients, which can be physical, psychological, or emotional. These effects can be detrimental to a patient’s already fragile health, as they can experience increased pain, a risk of post-operative complications, and an extended length of stay in hospital.
We are raising $3.5 million to help support the creation of the Centre for Optimal Recovery After Surgery at the MUHC.
Enhanced Recovery Programs and the MUHC
The MUHC is working to change the way patients prepare before surgery and recover post-surgery through the implementation of innovative Enhanced Recovery Programs (ERPs) for surgery. This more holistic approach cares for patients throughout the entire cycle of perioperative care.
ERPs have already been implemented within several MUHC surgical specialties, and many patient benefits have been demonstrated including decreased post-surgery complications and quicker return to life.
The MUHC is planning to implement ERPs across the entire MUHC surgical mission and this innovative model will deliver best practices in recovery for all surgical patients.
"The McGill University Health Centre’s (MUHC) surgical team is already leading the way nationally in terms of minimally invasive surgery. By creating a dedicated Centre for Enhanced Recovery After Surgery, we will take the next step in improving the health and recovery of our surgical patients. Our goal is to have patients back on their feet and returning to normal as soon as possible – ERAS can help us do that."
-Dr. Gerald M. Fried, Surgeon in Chief, MUHC
