What are the Pathy Family Fellowship Awards?

To provide financial support for highly qualified, promising post-Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (RCPS) training fellows to allow them to pursue additional post-RCPS sub-specialty clinical training and research training. Priority will be given to fellowships that include research training with the highest priority for clinician-scientist training.

The area of training must: 

1) be in a McGill Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) approved Post-Graduate Medical Education (PGME) Fellowship Program

2) and be supervised by an MUHC Faculty member practicing in a clinical area based at the RVH and supported by the MUHC Foundation. Please contact us before starting your application to confirm that your Fellowship falls within our allowable categories.

Who is it for?

This fellowship is designed for MDs who aim to become clinician-scientists or clinician-investigators or expert sub-specialty clinicians. Eligible candidates must be engaged in an FMHS-approved Postgraduate Medical Education at McGill University Fellowship Program.

The components of the application include the following documents. The applicant letter, description of research/ academic project, and supervisor letter which are a maximum of 2 pages with a minimum of 12-point font and 1-inch margins, applicant CV (no page limit) and supervisor CV (no page limit):

  • A letter from the applicant*
    The applicant should submit a letter (maximum two pages) outlining their career background, specific educational objectives for the fellowship—including planned rotations, time allocation for clinical work, research, and teaching—plans for the research component based on their objectives, and future career plans.
  • Summary of proposed research or academic project
    If the research proposal requires additional funds, the summary should describe the source of this funding (obtained or applied for) and should include a brief discussion of alternatives, if applied-for funding is not successful.
  • A copy of the applicant's current CV
    If there is no specific applicant named please provide the current CVs of the last 5 Fellows in the Fellowship program.
  • A copy of the proposed primary supervisor(s)’ current CV
  • A letter of support from the proposed primary supervisor 
    Ensure the letter outlines 1) the strengths and weaknesses of the candidate, 2) the clinical fellowship and research facilities and resources available to the candidate, and 3) the proportion of time the candidate will spend on research, course work, clinical duties, and teaching. Describe the benefit to the MUHC (reputation, recruitment, support of existing research initiatives).

*If a specific Fellow is not identified in the application the “2-page applicant letter” should be replaced by a 2-page description of the Fellowship program’s prior Fellows. Specifically, detail their additional training prior/ during the Fellowship (MSc or PhD) of the prior Fellows, their productivity during the Fellowship, their current academic position, current academic productivity, and their ongoing ties to the MUHC. Focus on the last 10 Fellows.
