McGill Centre for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease
Every seven minutes, a Canadian dies from heart disease, making it the most common cause of death in our country. 90% of Canadians have at least one risk factor associated with the disease and more than 350,000 Canadians are hospitalized for heart disease each year. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) can have a significant physical, emotional and financial impact on patients and their families.
Better efforts related to prevention need to be made before the disease claims another life.
The Benefit Model
The MUHC bases its CVD assessment on benefit and not just risk. The hospital has implemented the Benefit Model among its clinical practice, which incorporates and extends the traditional “risk model” by treating younger people who have a greater opportunity to benefit from statin treatments.
By using this new treatment strategy, the number of people who will be eligible to be screened for heart disease will greatly increase, which will ultimately lower the incidence of CVD in men and women.
How you can Help
To bring the MUHC one step closer to leading the worldwide effort to better prevent and treat cardiovascular disease we are raising $5 million to support the creation of the McGill Centre for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease.
"The MUHC’s strategy for assessing heart disease is radically different than the conventional model used today. Our Benefit Model and new technologies such as apoB testing are leading the way globally in changing the prevention paradigm for cardiovascular disease."
-Dr. Allan Sniderman, MUHC Cardiologist
